THE BACKGROUND

Careful refurbishment was needed to preserve existing aspects of the library, which is more than 150 years old.

The library houses about half a million books and about four million archived items on a total of 35 km of shelving.

The project reached construction completion in January 2013 and is open to the public.

Shepherd Construction provided construction services, the architects were Austin Smith and Lord and Equans provides facilities management for the development.

Project revenues are availability- based, payable by the public sector client, Liverpool City Council.
