The A$1bn project is a PPP contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a light rail public transportation system between Gold Coast University Hospital and Broadbeach aimed at significantly reducing traffic congestion. The concession runs for 15 years from construction completion.
The project includes 16 stations, a number of viaduct and bridge structures as well as the provision and operation of 45 metre trains. The project has been designed to accommodate a peak daily usage of 75,000 passengers. The new light rail system is scheduled to open in 2014 with the concession expiring in April 2029.
Bombardier Transportation is responsible for design and supply of the light rail vehicles and rail systems, and McConnell Dowell is responsible for rail infrastructure and building works.
Project revenues are availability based.
The public sector client is the Queensland Government.
